MISFITS & OSAKA POPSTAR FEATURED IN STICKER ART CULTURE BOOK: STICKERS: FROM PUNK ROCK TO CONTEMPORARY ART

Written on Sep 30

Whether you’re a punk, skater, graffiti artist, musician, clothing brand, political activist, fine artist, or just a fan of a band, stickers have always been the perfect way to express oneself.

Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art” is a great new book by DB Burkeman and Monica LoCascio, with introductions by Shepard Fairey & Carlo McCormick. The book was published by Rizzoli, a leader in art and design books.

Among the works spotlighted in the comprehensive collective, the Misfits iconic Fiend Skull is featured, along with a quote from Misfits founding member Jerry Only himself about the logo’s impact on pop culture.

Three different Osaka Popstar sticker designs, art directed by John Cafiero, including the Devil Dog (illustrated by Mari-chan), Osaka Monstar (by Dalek) and Osaka Popcan (by John Pound), are also featured within the 308 page oversized coffee table book.

Stickers features approximately 4,000 stickers from the exploding, vibrant world of street art, DIY culture, music, and branding. Cheap, democratic, easy to “tag,” and not always fast to fade, the sticker has been an ever-present medium—from the New York and London underground punk scene to skate culture and political expression. Celebrating the graphics of this street-art medium, Stickers illustrates the timeline of this pastime, from counterculture to politics. The book includes approximately 4,000 sticker graphics organized by categories and themes, with works by such diverse artists as Raymond Pettibon (Black Flag); street artists such as  Shepard Fairey, Banksy and Kaws; and amateur artists who “tag” the streets anonymously. The book illustrates not only the visual and social history of sticker art but also the personal relationship that street artists and pedestrians alike have with stickers. The book even includes eight sheets of stickers.

“Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art” is out now in stores and online everywhere in Standard Softcover Edition OR, for hardcore collectors, pick up the Deluxe Ltd. Hardcover Edition packaged in an oversized clamshell box. Includes 23 original die-cut stickers, many of which are signed by the artist.
